being migratory birds. A symbol of the Danube Delta is the pelican - according to some estimates, the pelican colony in the fully- protected Roşca -Buhaiova area is the largest in Europe.
At the same time, 60% of
the world’s small cormorant population and 50% of the world’s red-breasted goose population live in the Delta. Mammals are represented by 54 species, including species whose preservation is important at European level, such as otter or European mink, muskrat and wild boar.
Flora - a delight for the contemplating eyes
The flora of the Delta is represented by 2,383 species, and about 70% of its vegetation is dominated by reed, rush, Scirpetum associations, and reed vegetation.
Water lilies and thistles float undisturbed in the lakes and canals, while the willow forests seem to prevent the drowning of the banks.
Unusual tourist destinations
The Razim-Sinoe lagoon complex, declared a special avifauna protection area, is composed of: the Razim Lake, located between the Dunavăţ Peninsula, the Sinoe Lake, the Black Sea, the Dranov Basin and the Dobrogei Plateau; the Sinoe Lake - located between Grindul Lupilor, the Black Sea and the Dobrogei Plateau, with an
area of approximately 15,500 ha; and the lakes Golovița, Zmeica, Babadag, Nuntaşi
and Tuzla. Once arrived in the area, tourists can experience, in addition to the attractive show offered by nature, an encounter with history, through
the archaeological ruins of Argamum, Histria and Enisala. The area was declared part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve in 1979. Its lakes host the largest common pelican colonies in Europe. There are currently over 3,500 pairs of common pelicans, along with birds like the great egret, the little egret, and the spoonbill. The reserve also hosts a wide variety of mammals such as otter, mink, ermine, muskrat, raccoon, fox, wild boar etc.
The Letea Forest protected area reveals itself to the tourists from among lianas (the only place
in Europe where lianas can be found) and silver poplars, brown oak trees, ashes and white and black poplars.
There are several thousand plant species here, dozens of them unique in Europe or in the world. There are also rare plant species, such as orchid, asparagus and liana, a plant of Mediterranean origin, which reaches here its northernmost border in Europe.

Area: 580,000 ha - 2,5% of the area of Romania (22nd place among the deltas of the world and 3rd place in Europe, after Volga and Kuban).

Here live 98% of the European aquatic fauna. Fish is represented by 65 species, mostly freshwater species (60%).
