A trip through Romania cannot leave out the Danube Delta, the third largest in Europe, after the Volga Delta and the Kuban Delta, but by far the most mysterious one. If you travel through Romania in search of inspiring places, the Danube Delta cannot go unnoticed. It is a paradise, certainly one of the most beautiful works of nature in this part of the world. A place forgotten by time where the blue Danube meets the Black Sea. Tourism in the delta has preserved a respect for nature, and welcoming locations combine the old with the modern touch to provide a privileged space for the visitor.
The Delta provides Romanians with an opportunity to preserve one of the most admirable creations of nature, a natural and wild space that tells us about how nature can cut our breath. The Danube Delta exerts a true mirage for Romanian
and foreign tourists, who are fascinated by the mystery of its secret corners. Nowhere else
in the world you can see such ‘young’ land born from the water, the youngest in Europe, which grows by about 40 hectares per year, alongside such ‘old’ land.
It can be said that, with the impressive diversity of the habitats and life forms hosted by a relatively small area, the Danube Delta is a true museum of biodiversity. Therefore,
In 1990, the Danube Delta was declared a Biosphere Reserve by the Romanian Government, and its universal value was also recognised by its inclusion in the international network of biosphere reserves (1990) under the ‘Man and the Biosphere’ Programme (MAB) launched by UNESCO in the 1970s.
The universal natural heritage value of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve was recognised by the inclusion of more than half of its area in
the World Cultural and Natural Heritage List, developed by
the World Heritage Committee on the basis of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by the UNESCO Member States in 1972.
A creatures’ paradise
Tourists remain under the spell of the fauna encountered in the Delta, a true fauna paradise.
