The opportunities offered by Romanian tourism have been discussed on many occasions. Well-preserved cultural areas can pave the way for the development of the local communities through local and regional tourism. Such an area that is often spoken about is Maramureş.
Rightly considered by many, the soul of the typical Romanian village, Maramureş delights the visitor with its tradition and customs that are unique
in the world (the amazing epitaphs on the crosses of the Săpânța Cemetery).
With its picturesque settlements, green hills and plains full of wild flowers, Maramureş embodies everything that country life means. Who reaches these lands has the unique opportunity to go back in time, to be the witness of different times and of a quiet life, directly connected to the nature. The words of the Romanian philosopher Lucian Blaga,
that eternity was born in the countryside become significant in this land. The unique opportunity of tourism in Maramureş
is related to the natural preservation of the traditions and of the Romanian peasant’s life style, in the countries of Maramureş the tourist can observe the past life of the local communities. The Maramureş
village stands for a testament
of the traditional and of the natural conservation, of times
of simplicity, customs and moral models, about which, nowadays, we only read or hear about from our grandparents.
Modernity and its unforgiving technological attack were not successful in this area. The modern tourist which arrives
in these places is invited to observe, live, become a wheel of this mechanisms but, with all his involvement, needs a special soul to merge with the local reality. Otherwise will remain a simple tourist, with his modern camera or with the mobile phones with cameras that try to “steel” this magnificent landscape and take it to the four corners of the world. This because in Maramureş, foreigners from everywhere arrive, attracted by the mystery which encircles the rituals and masks reminding the old Dacians and their foolish bravery in the face of death. The death caught in a few simple, concise and waggish verses, which hide the
attitude of the Moroşan (the locals) towards the non-life. Life and non-life, two sides of the same coin, of the same attitudes and characters, which outline the fundamental matrix of stability on these lands. But, even so, it
is worth exploring Maramureş, because it offers you the chance to become simple, to enjoy the sound of a water stream, an unexplored meadow and a defiant, and, at the same time, humbled verse in the face of death.
Maramureş is a complex
area, where the people and
their actions are not subject
to negotiations, not even for tourism. The tourism promoted here transforms the tourist in a guest invited at the table and in the house, simply and modestly. The fact that the Moroşeni reveal to the traveller something about the secrets of the community
is not commercial, it is a duty
of the community, a thing to be proud of, to show the invaluable treasure of the Maramureş communities. The uniqueness
