   Jidvei
A history of Romanian wines will inevitably begin with the Jidvei estates. Not necessarily because it is the largest project of its kind in the country, with more than 2,400 hectares and over 10 million bottled bottles, but because of the way investments were made in Jidvei, because of what is achieved year after year in this part of Romania – wines of exceptional quality.
The most important player in this
market takes pride in honouring its
name. Professionalism, art, excellence, participation in the life of the community and, of course, international recognition crowning this effort.
The year 2018 earned Jidvei two gold and three silver medals at the Austrian Wine Challenge
- AWC Vienna, the largest officially recognised wine competition in the world. More than 1,700 producers from 39 countries participated in the 15th edition of this competition. It should also
be mentioned that this is one of the biggest competitions in the world and that Jidvei ranked among the best participants. At this year’s edition, Jidvei won two gold medals, with the Grigorescu Gewurztraminer 2017 wines and the wine blend TR+SB 2017 of the Mysterium category. In addition, three of the Jidvei wines were awarded silver medals - Maria Fetească Albă 2017 in the Owner’s Choice range, Vinul Unirii Fetească Regală 2017 and the Jidvei Extra Dry sparkling wine.
The history of viticulture in the Târnave region
The success story of Romanian wines
goes back to the time of the Geto-Dacians. In 1949, the first Jidvei State Agricultural Enterprise was established here, with wines particularly appreciated by connoisseurs, as evidenced by
the medals won in international competitions. In 1999, the enterprise was privatised and became the Jidvei company. The Classic, Castel, Tezaur, Grigorescu, Nec Plus Ultra, Mysterium and Owner’s Choice ranges were added to the Tradiţional range, created before 1989. Jidvei means passion intertwined with tradition and history. All you need for a quality wine.
When we talk about wines, we have to talk about the vineyard first. When we talk about Jidvei, we have to start by talking about the Castle. It does not seem to be the central element in the bigger picture, but with everything that it represents today, it plays a fundamental role in the history of the Jidvei estate.
An imposing building, located on a hill that seems to be watching over Cetatea de Baltă, the Bethlen- Haller Castle has gone through fire and sword over time, before it became today’s valuable symbol
of Jidvei. The current castle was built between 1570 and 1580 in the northeast part of the city
and underwent a radical restoration by Count Ștefan Bethlen between 1615 and 1624 following the Chambord Castle in France. Castles are usually surrounded by legends and myths and the Bethlen-Haller Castle is no exception. One such legend says that there is a secret tunnel connecting the castle in Cetatea de Baltă to the Bethlen Castle in Sânmiclăuş.
