workshop and painting sheds, the investment also included improvements to infrastructure, environment, security and health and safety. Currently investments are being made to allow the shipyard to build multiple vessels indoors in parallel, with the required security and control, which would be a great boost in productivity.
Today, the yard’s transformation is evident: occupying a 55 hectare site, Damen Shipyards Galaţi resembles a small city. The yard has a workforce of nearly 2,300 plus up to 1,300 subcontractors’ staff, and is certified by the Romanian Government to train shipbuilders to the highest level. By maintaining a strong focus on performance and demonstrating dedication to craftsmanship true to its heritage, Damen Shipyards Galaţi has achieved controlled growth and profitability.
High quality vessels for a worldwide market

Damen Shipyards Galaţi has built up a diverse reference list of vessels at the top end of Damen’s product portfolio. Regular contracts for complex, high-spec vessels prove that the Galaţi yard
can compete with European and Asian yards by building high quality vessels, more efficiently and with quick delivery times.
Recent noteworthy projects include the Damen Offshore Carrier 8500: Maersk Connector, a new generation subsea support vessel for offshore cable-laying activities, Service Operations
Vessel Bibby WaveMaster 1, with a walk-to-work functionality in a new vessel design purpose- built for offshore operations, an Antarctic Supply Research Vessel for the Australian Antarctic Division, to facilitate Australia’s wider exploration of the Southern Ocean and Antarctic continent. As well as Damen’s own quality standards, Damen Shipyards Galaţi integrates a Quality Policy System in its management processes.
The system meets the following standards ISO
9001:2008 for Quality Management System, OHSAS 18001:2008 for Occupational Health & Safety Management System, ISO 14001:2005 for Environmental Management System, Lloyd’s Register JH 143 Shipyard Risk Assessment
and AQAP 2120 (Allied Quality Assurance Publications/NATO standardization) certificate.
Back to its “grey” beginnings
Under the guidance of its sister company Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, which has been serving the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN)
since 1879, the Galaţi shipyard has become once again Romania’s centre of excellence for building military vessels. All in all, 29 defence and security vessels have been either delivered or are now in various stages of completion in Galaţi, making the shipyard one of the biggest Romanian exporters of military products.
