RINO BRUGGE
MANAGING DIRECTOR OF DAMEN GALAȚI
Shipyards Galaţi and to develop the huge potential of Damen Shipyards Mangalia. Such professional approach will remain a great value for the communities Damen Group operates in. Galaţi Shipyard admittedly remains Damen Group’s ‘pearl’ in Romania for the time being, with military vessel export deliveries of over € 2 billion (final total value). Damen Shipyards Galaţi is specialized in complex vessels – superyachts, military vessels, specialised offshore vessels, e.g. the Antarctic Supply Research Vessel (ASRV) delivered to Australia. ’The acquisition of Mangalia shipyard was performed taking
into consideration completely different vessel types’, Mr. Brugge adds. ‘For instance, they have very large docks, of widths ranging from 48 to 60 meters, such facilities being unavailable at Damen Shipyards Galaţi. Damen Group was highly interested in such facilities from Mangalia, which would allow it to penetrate several new market segments, such as large ferries and cruise ships’.
Therefore, Damen Group will operate two large production yards in Romania, at Galaţi and Mangalia. Competition between these two shipyards is out of the question, as it would infringe upon the parent group’s philosophy.
The Group’s policy – with over 35 yards worldwide – is to optimize the business of these
96
shipyards. Damen Shipyards Galaţi now has new colleagues in Romania to collaborate with on various projects. For instance, Damen Shipyards Mangalia could help in case Damen Shipyards Galaţi would have insufficient personnel for completing the shipbuilding projects. Such interdepartmental organizational cooperation represents an important future advantage of Damen Group.
It stands to reason that the Group would not have initiated such a business acquisition without a thorough market survey and forecast. The two shipyards can operate as niche yards, i.e. military vessels, superyachts, research vessels at Galaţi and cruise ships and large ferries at Magalia, respectively. The Group’s strategists believe they will carry out important business in Romania in the coming years as well.
The Excellence Centre from Galaţi – a European success
Damen Shipyards Galaţi is a Damen excellence centre in military vessel building. It’s about proven capacity and expertise since 1999, when Damen Shipyards Galaţi joined Damen Shipyards Group, with the delivery of approx. 30 defence & security vessels to 13 different countries, including NATO and EU countries. For instance, the most important projects for the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) were built here, in Galaţi, including JSS Karel Doorman, which is
