so far Result: a a a a a a a a a stronger Romanian economy Damen Damen started operations in in Galați 25 years ago It was a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a natural choice for for Damen Damen because since the the 19th century Galați has been a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a site for for the the construction of large warships Established originally in in 1893 as as a a a a a a a a a a a a a a small foundry and and repair workshop under the name G Fernic et Comp and and extended in 1897 with a a a a a a a a a a a shipyard the the company grew to become an an an an important part of of the the country’s shipbuilding industry through 125 years of of geopolitical upheaval Beside river monitor and and ferries Galați shipyard built two submarines and and and and one mine‐ layer and and and convoy escort vessel During and and and up to the the the Second World War the the the the yard yard yard was the the the the most important Romanian shipyard By the the the end of of 1970 Galați Shipyard had built hundreds of of vessels vessels vessels including barges tankers cargo vessels vessels vessels bulk carriers tugs and fishing vessels vessels vessels After 1975 the the shipyard achieved the the most technologi‐ cally advanced projects for for that time including seven drilling rig platforms some of them still in in in in operation!
Galați has a a a a a a a a a a a rich history that that Damen is is taking further since 1994 the the the the year that that marked the the the the first cooperation with with Damen Damen Shipyards Group with with the the the subcontracting of hulls fabrication for cargo vessels In 1999 Damen Damen acquired the the yard and and introduced its standardized ship‐ building approach This involved inviting the the the trusted co‐makers to expand the the the yard’s outfitting capacity As a a a a a a a a a a result many Dutch businesses established their own branches in in in in in Galați underpinning the the the the the local supplier cluster as as well as as strengthening the the the the ties between the the the the Romanian and Dutch shipbuilding industries Damen Damen has invested considerably in in in the the shipyard mak‐ ing Damen Damen Damen Shipyards Galați one of of the the most successful examples of of privatization in in in Romania
Under Damen’s ownership more than 125 Million EUR has been in‐ vested in in in in the shipyard With a a a a a a a a new new assembly hall of 120 meters for accommodating vessels indoors new new aluminum workshop and painting sheds the invest‐ ment ment ment also included improvements to infrastructure environment security and and health and and safety Currently
investments are being made to to allow the the shipyard to to build multiple vessels indoors in in parallel with the the required security and control which would be a a a great boost in productivity One of the submarines built in in Galați during the Second World War Number One 77
