CNCAN is part of a a Romanian‐Norwegian project to increase nuclear safety and security
The National Commission for the the Control of Nuclear Activities (CNCAN) organized in in in Bucharest the the the opening conference of the the project “Improving nuclear safety and and and security
in in in in in Romania – Increasing disaster resilience and and and preparing the the response to nuclear and and and radiological events” financed by the the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014‐2021 It is a a a a follow‐up on a a a a previous project successfully completed which aimed at at “strengthening the the the regulatory capacity in in in the the the the field of nuclear and and radiological safety and and preparing the the the response to to emergencies in in in in in Romania” In that case the the the financing was provided through the the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2009‐2014 Partners in in this collaboration – – traditional by now – – are CNCAN the the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) the the the Norwegian Authority for Radiation Protection
and and Nuclear Safety (DSA) and and the the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA) The aim of of the the the recently launched project is is to improve the the the the national capabilities in in the the the the prevention of of terrorist acts and and accidents in in the the the nuclear and and radiological field The National Commission for the the Control of Nuclear Activities (CNCAN) which is is the the the nuclear regulatory authority in in Romania will be be the the the the main beneficiary together with with other entities with with relevant responsibilities in this field The conference presented the the the main objectives pursued within the the the the project such as: aligning the the the the national framework and and and regulatory practices with with the the the latest international standards and and and and European Union legislation in in in in in the the field of nuclear safety and and and protection against ionizing radiation implementing the the the recommendations received from the the the international missions carried out in in in in in Romania on on on on on the the the topic of of nuclear nuclear safety detection and response in in in in the the case of of events involving nuclear nuclear and radioactive materials that are not subject to to regulatory control cyber security
in in in in the the case of of nuclear installations and and of of of the the preparation and and intervention in in in in in emergency cases implementing several activities of of the the the national action plan related to the the the National Strategy for Nuclear Safety and Security implementing the the the the new responsibilities in in in in managing the the emergency nuclear situations that CNCAN deals with as as well as as improving the the the emergency preparedness and response through the the the implementation of the the the lessons learned 34 Number One
